What does school bus tracking cost in India? (And when it's free)

Ask five school-bus-tracking vendors "what does it cost?" and four will answer "let's get on a call." That's not an accident — pricing in this market is opaque by design. We checked the pricing pages of the major Indian school-tracking vendors, and most publish no numbers at all, only "Get Quote" buttons. So this guide assembles the figures that are publicly published, tells you the questions that surface the rest, and is honest about our own interest: Skolbuzz is free, and we'll explain exactly what that does and doesn't mean.

The anatomy of a tracking bill

A traditional, device-based system has four cost layers. Published Indian pricing (from industry buyer's guides and the few vendors with public price pages) puts them here:

• The GPS device, per bus — roughly ₹3,000–₹9,000 for a basic-to-certified AIS-140 unit, rising to ₹25,000+ for units bundled with CCTV. For reference, Karnataka's notified price for a compliant AIS-140 device from empanelled vendors was ₹7,599 + GST.
• The SIM card in each device — the most consistently cited number across sources: ₹150–₹350 per bus, per month, forever.
• The software subscription — published fleet-platform pricing runs about ₹200–₹800 per vehicle per month; some school-focused packages are quoted far higher (vendor blogs cite ₹1,500–₹8,000 per bus per month for premium tiers). One of the few school vendors with a public price page charges a flat ₹1,000/month for the software plus ₹4,000–₹8,000 per bus for hardware.
• Maintenance and renewals — annual maintenance contracts around ₹500–₹1,200 per device per year, plus replacement when devices fail. One industry guide puts the realistic 3-year total cost of ownership at ₹22,000–₹62,000 per vehicle depending on tier.

For a 10-bus school, that arithmetic lands anywhere between roughly ₹75,000 and several lakh over three years — which is why the "what does it cost" question deserves a better answer than a sales call.

The hidden costs that only appear later

• Fitting and downtime — devices must be installed, and re-installed when they fail.
• Renewal creep — year one is often bundled; SIM and subscription renewals arrive as separate line items from year two.
• "Free hardware" — usually recovered inside a higher subscription; ask for the 3-year total, not the monthly teaser.
• Lock-in — annual contracts with the school's route data living in the vendor's system.
• Per-parent charges — some products charge by student count, which turns a growing school into a growing bill.

Five questions that expose the real price

1. What is the all-in, 3-year cost for our fleet size — hardware, SIMs, software, AMC, renewals?
2. Which of those line items recur, and what did they cost your existing customers at renewal?
3. If a device fails in month 14, who pays for the replacement and refitting?
4. Is the parent app included, or a separately priced add-on?
5. If we leave, what happens to our data — and what does exporting it cost?

When it's genuinely free — and what "free" means here
