What is live school bus tracking?
Live school bus tracking is a system that shows the current position of a school bus on a map, in real time, to the people who need to see it — parents on that route and the school's transport office. Modern systems add automatic notifications on top: a ping when the bus is approaching your stop, a confirmation when your child boards, and another when they step off.
There are two broad ways to build it. The traditional way installs a dedicated GPS device in the vehicle. The newer, app-based way uses the driver's smartphone as the tracker. Both put a dot on a map; they differ in cost, installation, and maintenance (more on that in our RFID vs GPS comparison).
The three screens involved
- The driver's phone — during a trip, it reads its own GPS position and sends it to a secure cloud database. In an app-based system like Skolbuzz, this happens roughly every 3 seconds, through the driver app, with nothing installed in the vehicle.
- The parent's phone — the parent app listens to that same database and draws the bus on a map, along with which stops remain before yours. When the bus crosses certain thresholds — for example, coming within 1 km of your child's stop — the system sends a push notification.
- The school's dashboard — the transport office sees every route at once: which buses are out, where each one is, and whether trips are running normally.
How the position actually travels
The chain is simpler than it sounds. The driver's phone (or a fitted GPS device) determines its own location from satellite signals — the same way any phone does for navigation. It then transmits that position over the mobile network to a cloud database. The parent and school apps are subscribed to that database, so each new position appears on their maps within moments. The whole loop — road to satellite to cloud to a parent's screen — typically takes a few seconds.
Well-designed systems are careful about what they keep. There is no need to store where the bus has been — only where it is now. Skolbuzz, for example, overwrites each position with the next one and deletes the live location entirely when the trip ends, so no location history ever accumulates.
The alerts are the real product
A dot on a map is useful; being told the right thing at the right moment is what actually removes the daily anxiety. A complete system covers the whole journey:
- Bus approaching — a heads-up when the bus is close to your stop (under 1 km, in Skolbuzz's case), so you step out exactly on time.
- Boarded — confirmation the moment your child is marked aboard.
- Arrived at school / dropped off at home — the two moments parents most want confirmed.
- Didn't board — a warning if your child wasn't marked aboard the expected trip.
- Changes — a substitute driver, a replacement bus, or a school announcement for the whole route.
What live tracking can't do — the honest part
Any vendor who promises perfection is overselling. Live tracking depends on three fragile things: the tracking device (or phone), its battery, and the mobile network along the route. Rural stretches, network dead zones, and a phone that dies mid-trip all interrupt the feed.
What separates good systems is honesty about the gap. When the feed stops, a good system says so — rather than showing a stale position as if it were live. When you evaluate any system, ask the vendor directly: "What does a parent see when the bus loses signal?" The answer tells you a lot.
Worth remembering: tracking is an information tool, not a safety guarantee. It supplements the school's supervision and the attendant on the bus — it doesn't replace either.
The privacy questions worth asking
A school bus tracking system handles data about children, so a careful parent or school should ask any vendor:
- Whose location is tracked? (It should be only the driver's device, only during trips — never parents' or children's phones.)
- Is location history stored, and for how long?
- Who can see a child's information — and is access limited by role?
- Is data sold or used for advertising?
- Is there a public, specific privacy policy — not a generic template?

What a school needs to get started
